Super Hero or Super Zero: June 16th Edition

by Brandon Keller

SyFy

What it’s all about:
The Sci Fi channel has released a series of promos announcing their imminent rebranding as SyFy. They believe the new name will reflect the depth of their programming better, and draw more viewers at the same time.

Super Hero:
People not in the know will finally stop asking fans, “What the heck does this show have to do with sci fi?”

Super Zero:
I’d prefer it if the name of one of my favorite channels wasn’t reminiscent of syphilis, as appealing as puss-filled lesions can be.

RLSH

What it’s all about:
A member of the Real-Life Superhero movement was interviewed on network news recently, explaining what these folks do, and why.

Super Hero:
Men and women running around doing charity work and other good deeds in the name of something I love is inspiring.

Super Zero:
It’s not stopping at just charity work, and one of these fools is eventually going to get gunned down. Either that, or I have to go hunt down a radioactive spider.

Cap’s Back

What it’s all about:
With a series hints as subtle as a brick wall, Marvel has finally announced that Cap will be returning from the grave.

Super Hero:
From the first issue of the Winter Solider arc, this whole story has been incredibly well-told. Plus, the trailer for Captain America: Reborn looks awesome.

Super Zero:
Bucky hasn’t had time to make the mantle his own yet. Besides, a death in the Marvel universe that doesn’t include a clone or two somehow feels incomplete.

Dick Grayson is Batman

What it’s all about:
The vacuum created by the “death” of Batman has finally been filled by the original Boy Wonder.

Super Hero:
Dick is one of the few supers in the history of comics to actually get a real chance to grow and develop over time. It is only natural that he would one day take over the family business.

Super Zero:
Three Words: Jean-Paul Valley. He’s coming back, you just know it.

Convention Exclusives

What it’s all about:
Whether it’s special variant covers, or figures of Hal Jordan as a member of the various corps, exclusive items for sale began the day after the first convention. These exclusive items can only be had by attending the cons they’re sold at or spending an obscene amount of money (or both).

Super Hero:
These things are always made of awesome. Always. We know they’re worth every single penny, despite how much our significant others may disagree.

Super Zero:
Round trip airfare from Ohio to San Diego costs how much?!

Megan Fox

What it’s all about:
If you’ve been paying attention lately, you know that Megan Fox’s name is all over some of the geekiest properties out there, from rumors about Buffy to actual appearances in Transformers, Fathom, and Jonah Hex.

Super Hero:
She’s the movie equivalent of the hot girl at the comic book store.

Super Zero:
Remember Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four? Yeah, I try to repress that too.
