Marvel has announced their summer 2012 crossover event, and it finally answers the mystery behind the “It’s Coming” previews featuring the Phoenix. The Phoenix Force is, indeed, coming back to Earth, and its arrival will bring the X-Men and the Avengers into conflict.
The two teams learn that the Phoenix Force is coming back and is looking for a new host. But something they learn will put the teams into deadly conflict – which can only lead to gut-wrenching decisions for heroes who are a part of both teams. Of course, anytime the cosmic embodiment of life, death and rebirth is involved, there’s a safe bet that the Summers-Grey family will be involved on a personal level.
Avengers vs. X-Men will be a 12-issue limited series created by some of the biggest names working at Marvel today, including writers Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction, with art coming from John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert. Continuing the trend towards integration with their digital platform, each issue will be available day-and-date digitally, and each print issue will include a code for a free digital copy on the Marvel Comics App at no additional cost (to either fans or retailers).
“Avengers vs. X-Men brings together the most powerful forces in comics for a super hero war like you’ve never seen before and will never see again. We all want to see the best of the best go against each other—Lakers & Celtics; Ali & Frazier; Yankees & Red Sox; and in comics it’s the Avengers fighting the X-Men, ” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “We’ve brought together the biggest writers, biggest artists and biggest characters for the biggest story we’ve ever told. This is the kind of high-octane action-packed story that fans demand while also having a profound effect on every character involved—and reshaping the Marvel Universe in its wake.”
The first issue of Avengers vs. X-Men arrives in April 2012. The world’s greatest heroes Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto and more go to war.
