It has been only a week since Robert Rodriguez (the director behind Sin City) announced that his plans to remake the 1968 erotic sci-fi classic Barbarella had ended – in part because of Universal’s desire to shoot the film in Germany. However, Barbarella is hard to keep down, and now it looks like Rober Luketic (Monster-in-Law, Legally Blonde) is working with Dino De Laurentiis’ company to remake the film – possibly with a different studio.

The news comes our way via Entertainment Weekly, and a source tells the studio that β€œIt will be a big intergalactic adventure with a sexy twist.” Frankly, this seems to miss the point to me. The original Barbarella was an erotic adventure first, and a science-fiction film second.

There is no word as to who will take over the role that Jane Fonda did to such perfection in the original film. When Rodriguez was going to direct, it seemed likely that his girlfriend, Rose McGowan, would star. With Rodriguez’s departure, expect to see different casting for the film.

And just to remind you of how good Fonda was in the part, and why McGowan wouldn’t be a suitable replacement, here’s the trailer for the original film version of Barbarella.
