After the Blackest Night, Can the DC Universe Survive The War of the Supermen?

It has been joked that when Krypton exploded, the only people who died were Jor-El and Lara, and making Superman’s claim about being the “Last Son of Krypton” so much bunk. This isn’t actually true, of course, but with the New Krypton storyline that has been going on in DC Comics, it’s fun to joke about.
But if you’ve been keeping up with the Superman titles, then you know that all is not well between Earth and it’s newest neighbor. And really, what could possibly go wrong with a planet full of Superman-level powered characters orbiting so close to Earth? Especially when the one Kryptonian that humanity completely trusts has returned to his people, leaving Earth in the hands of Nightwing, Flamebird, Mon-El and the Guardian?
Well, now we know, with the teaser knowledge that on May 1, 2010, as a part of Free Comic Book Day, we’re getting War of the Supermen 0, which kicks off an event sure to change things in the life of the Man of Steel and those around him.
We don’t have a lot of details on the book yet, but we do know that James Robinson will be writing War of the Supermen 0, with Eddy Barrows providing the illustrations. And thanks to DC Universe: The Source, we also have a shot of the cover created by J.G. Jones.
Matt Idelson spoke briefly to DC Universe: The Source about the book, saying “War of the Supermen is the culmination of literally years of stories in the Super-books, all building to a destructive conflict which can have no victors. This Free Comic Book Day #0 issue is going to show the readers that no cows are sacred, and that they don’t want to miss this event.”
There was also an interview posted to TIME’s Techland Blog with Idelson where he revealed a few more tidbits, explaining that War of the Supermen will be self-contained, but will also flow in to the obviously related titles, such as Supergirl, Adventure Comics and so on. He also teased that we will see new characters wearing the famous “S-Shield”, but maybe not the ones we expect to see. And he said that we’d see some version of Batman beating up some Kryptonian.

I refer to this as “EVENT PROGRAMING” and I hate it. A Company wide crossover is fine once in a while – but they are doing them so much these day NONE of them feel special
