Blackest Night Brings Not Just Dead Characters But Dead Titles Back to Life!

The power of the Black Lantern is apparently strong enough to not only bring dead heroes and villains back to life, but it can even resurrect dead titles. The first major arc of Blackest Night will be wrapping up with the books shipping in December 2009, and before the second arc begins, DC is taking a month off from the mini-series.
But does that mean that we won’t have any zombie-hero goodness from DC in the month of January? Heck no!
Instead, we’ll get eight one-shots that serve as an additional issue for canceled titles from DC’s past. The list comes our way thanks to DC Universe: The Source.
The announcement was made during the Diamond Retailer Summit in Baltimore.
Power of Shazam 48: Eric Wallace brings Osiris back from the dead to “chew the fat” with a now de-powered Billy and Mary Batson.
Catwoman 83: Fabian Nicieza brings the original Black Mask back to Gotham. You know, the one that Selina Kyle thought to shoot in the head.
Suicide Squad 67: Gail Simone and John Ostrander unite to bring us an epic battle between several very dead members of the Suicide Squad and the potentially soon-to-be dead Secret Six. This story seems like it could be subtitled “Deadshot’s really bad day.”
Question 37: If you read along with the training of Rene Montoya by the original Question, it sure seems like he wanted her to be his successor. But Greg Rucka has the real answer for what happens when two Questions come together.
Phantom Stranger 42: The Stranger has always been an enigma, whose role in the universe was not completely defined. So what does Blackest Night mean to him? Pete Tomasi reveals all.
Weird Western Tales 71: All of the classic Western heroes are dead by now. We know this. So, what does Blackest Night have in store for them? DC’s Dan DiDio will show you!
Atom and Hawkman 46: Geoff Johns brings us a creepy tale as the Black Lantern Hawks help their old friend, the Atom, reunite with his long dead love, Jean Loring.
Starman 81: James Robinson returns to Opal City as he revisits some old haunts.
At the present, no artists have been announced for any of these titles.
Comic Book Resources spoke to James Robinson Tuesday morning, and got a little bit of additional information out of him about what will happen in Starman 81. Bad news for Jack Knight fans, this won’t be his return. Here’s what Robinson had to say:
It’s very exciting to return to Opal City. And I’m trying to do a story that’s satisfying for long-time fans of Starman and also fans of the Blackest Night series. The only thing I will say now, probably to the disappointment of some fans, is that this is not the return of Jack Knight. This will feature cast members of Starman and it will feature a Black Lantern Starman but it will not feature Jack Knight.
Jack Knight is happily, much as I am, ensconced in San Francisco, happy to be alive and away from all the craziness.
On the one hand, this is a bit of a bummer. On the other hand, I’d rather not see Jack at all then see him transformed into a Black Lantern. But the temptation to have Jack re-encounter Nash and Kyle (the children of the original Mist, the mother of Jack Knight’s son and the only villain Jack ever had to kill) should have been impossible to resist.
